March 14 , 2007 - In the face of the ever-present security threats to UCR's networks and systems, Computing & Communications announces a number of security-focused web resources available to the campus community. In a large, diverse enterprise like UC Riverside, secure networks and systems can only be achieved through collaborative effort by all members of the campus community. Please visit the sites below to view information relating to security issues and challenges; you will also find a variety of tools and resources available for campus use. Security @ UCR - This is a comprehensive resource for campus departments and users seeking to protect their systems from security threats. On this site you will find the Minimum Standards required for connecting a computer to UCR's network, as well as resources, tools, and guidelines for securing both desktop and server systems. In addition, Security @ UCR provides access to free antivirus and antispyware tools for members of UCR's campus.
Password Management @ UCR - The security of a user's system and information is only as good as his or her password. Password Management @ UCR details UCR's secure password requirements as well as describing best practices for password creation and management. Users can also find information on how to update their passwords for various enterprise applications.
Browser Passwords - The incredible proliferation of websites requiring credentials and passwords leads many users to allow their browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) to store their passwords and usernames. This is an unacceptable security risk! Storing passwords within browsers exposes users to a variety of security risks, including not only the theft of passwords but potential downloads of viruses and spyware as well. Users currently storing passwords in their browser should visit this site immediately to learn how to disable this feature and purge these passwords from their system.
Windows Vista - In collaboration with other UC campuses, C&C is currently analyzing the impacts of Microsoft's new flagship operating system, Windows Vista, on UCR's software applications and security initiatives. C&C has prepared a website introducing users to Windows Vista, including information about the compatibility of Vista with UCR-developed applications, Vista licensing, the various versions of Windows Vista, and recommended system requirements. We strongly recommend campus members visit this site before making any decision to upgrade or purchase a new computer with Vista installed.
